Many people would say no, but in a word – yes. It is possible to work from home and make money. People who are short of cash or need a second job would like this option. If one needs flexibility they can search for fresh cash infusions online. There are challenges associated with working from home. You must consider them as well as how to go about it.

You Must Avoid Becoming a Mark

If you don’t know, a “mark” is the target for scammers. There are so many online. They make money by preying on desperate people. When you need money to feed your family or keep your house, lots of things may seem reasonable.

Extra money would ease your financial burden. Unfortunately, scammers only serve to strip you of whatever is left of your hard-earned money if you fall for their scheme. In desperate money situations even too good to be true offers can sound reasonable.

Here are three things to watch out for when looking for work at home or similar opportunities. That is, legitimate work from home positions.

• • Avoid requests for money – Any opportunity that asks for you to pay them for the privilege is a waste of time. Once you give them the money, they send you information about possible jobs or simply tell you what you already know. But, there is no job waiting for you.

 

• • Avoid anything involving get rich quick – If there was a way to make thousands of dollars a week stuffing envelopes, everyone would be doing it.

 

• Consider the source of the information – If it’s just a phone number with no other kind of contact, that’s very suspicious. Besides, who would pay that type of money for that kind of work? Think realistically before taking the plunge or responding.

Three Tried and True Ways of Finding Work

One way to always make money is to freelance. There are hundreds, if not thousands of freelance opportunities online. For example I often use writers from outsourcing sites to write articles for me. It’s a time saver for me and provides articles when I don’t have time to write myself.

Here are three things to consider if you want to outsource your skills.

• • Check freelance sites – Website businesses are always looking for writers to provide content. They need it for their sites and blogs. If you are a website programmer, designer, an expert in copywriting, and many other website necessities you can find opportunities at many sites. Here area a few: Elance, Freelancer, Guru, iFreelance, fiverr, Wework, and LogoMyWay.
  • Look in local papers – Some companies hire customer service jobs that can be done from home. As long as you have a computer and access to the internet, you can have calls routed to you for answering. It may require you to visit the main facility for training but then you can conduct other business from home.

    Some medical offices hire freelance medical coders and transcriptionists. If you have the expertise, you can hire out to a number of offices.

 

• Use your creativity – Some work from home positions can originate from your talents and interests. If you can sew, set up shop as a seamstress. Some people set up stores on eBay. Sell items you make yourself in an online store or auction. You can do something similar if you have goods to sell or in some cases homemade products. You can set up an Amazon store. There are other online places like ETSY where you can sell homemade goods.

Ordinary People can Definitely Make Money from Home

Sometimes it just takes a bit of thinking about what you can do or like doing. Working from home can also be sort of hybrid. Actually these “ordinary” people are not ordinary, but smart entrepreneurs or business people.

For example my sister started a business of offering African Safaris. Her office is her home. Most people cannot do something on that scale without lots of experience like Safari Kay.

However, she takes lots of pictures of the animals and scenes. Then she has those images transferred to items like coasters, bags, cutting boards, ceramic tiles, ashtrays, pictures, etc. She then sells them at local Southern California fairs.

Yes, something like selling your homemade wares takes a car and a table or two plus renting out space at a venue.

But it is possible to do well and make good money from photos you take. Its not just photos that can be used to help make money.

Go to one of these fairs and you can see loads of homemade items. You can get lots of ideas by just visiting such fairs or even swap meets.

On good weekends I’ve been with my sister when she makes $1000 or more on a weekend. If you visit any such fairs, like the huge one in Claremont California you can see hundreds of people selling lots of homemade items. Some of them do very well. It could be you in your local area.

Some Examples of Smart People Making Money from Home

Here is another example, although years old, people can still do this. My girlfriend, before I got married used to sell things at the Rose Bowl swap meet in Pasadena California. I’d go with her and help collect old items, including antiques.

She would get them from garage sales, yard sales, and smaller swap meets. Then once a month she would take those old products and sell them at that Pasadena Rose Bowl swap meet for a profit. Believe it or not, sometimes she would make $2000- $3000 in one afternoon doing this. This was back in the late 70s. It is still possible to do something similar.

Here’s an example of making money online from working at home. One weekend I went with my sister to a small outdoor fair in Long Beach California, about 70 or so miles from us. My sister was selling her photo accessories and other wares.

I walked around and met a lady that was selling crocheted baby booties. She had a small crowd of ladies there. She said she was also selling them on ETSY online. I asked if she was doing well on ETSY. Her answer was an emphatic yes! She told me her secret of how she was always at the top of the listings and was making very good money. According to her, from just that one item she was making more than many people that had regular jobs. She was doing it in her spare time.

Making money from home is not just possible from the USA. You can do it from many other countries. We went to the Philippines early this year (2017) to visit relatives.

There I met one smart lady, a very close relative, Cristina. From her home she makes women’s dresses and other garments. She made dresses for my daughters and daughter-in-law while we were there. Imagine going thousands of miles from home. Meeting for the first time a relative you’ve never met and getting custom made clothes to your exact specifications. Life is good in many unexpected ways.

Last but not least, my mom, who passed away some 15 years ago, made all sorts of handicrafts from our home. From the time we moved to California until her death she was always doing handicrafts and other things. She even went back to school and took college classes to learn how to make pottery.

In addition to pottery, she did painting, made lamp shades, women’s clothing, ashtrays and lots more. Handicrafts, clothing, she did it all and lots more ever since I was a child.

She knitted, crocheted, sewed and lots more. She would even sell some of her women’s clothing in high-end stores in Beverly Hills and other exclusive locations. In later years she exhibited and sold some of her paintings at the annual art fair in Pasadena California.

So if you hear people say you cannot make money from home close your ears. Get far away from them and don’t let their negativity influence you.

A Simple Idea Made US Extra Money

As mentioned above, when we used to go to swap meets.

I remember once we picked up an old stoplight for about $10 if I remember correctly.

It actually still worked once I applied power to it. We took it to the Rose Bowl swap meet.

I set it up for all three lights to blink in sequence. We had dozens of offers for it.

We didn’t sell it since we discovered it brought big crowds to her booth.

Just that one attraction made a difference of hundreds of dollars in extra profits.

I attributed that bonus money to that stoplight.

Thinking outside the box made that possible.

Here’s a tip and a possible business. A business I have been thinking about going into myself. I am always short of time and writing long articles takes more time than I usually have. Don’t use Amazon’s FBA program unless you are comfortable paying the FBA fees required. You might also be able to sell the items on eBay.

Plus, depending on the type of products, you might be able to sell them at the local swap meet.

Keep an open and inquisitive mind. You can usually pick up ideas that might be good for you to pursue.
