Making Money Online as a Senior – Don’t Suffer Moneywise because of Age
If you’re interested in making money online don’t let the fact that you’re a senior dissuade you. Even if you’re not a senior yet that’s no reason to ignore the potential and possibilities the internet can offer.
For me, the fact that I was a senior only meant I was older. From the time before I got married, some 3 decades ago, I had thought about getting more money. In fact I was more anxious to have more spendable money once I was a senior. I thought I had less time to create the kind of income I wanted because I was getting up in age.
So in my case, unlike most people, I stepped up my game and got involved in all sorts of potential moneymaking activities. That included stocks, options, and futures trading in the financial markets. It also included real estate investing. I bought a half-dozen houses using “no money down” techniques.
Then my wife decided to go into business so we bought another house specifically for that purpose. I was on the internet at that time competing with the youngsters. So don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old to do anything online, especially a business.
If You’re Not a Senior Yet – it Can Creep Up on You
I don’t remember exactly when I turned senior. It happened to me quite some time ago. It seems like sometime after I was in my 30s I started thinking I need more money. I wasn’t married, had three or more cars, had a decent job, and paying rent was no problem.
Having come from a low middle class family it was a natural for a minority like me to go to college. I did, but took the long way. Instead of doing like most people I decided to take only the subjects I liked. I used to paint and love art and drawing. So in Junior college in Chicago I started as an art major.
The family moved to California and I started my second year of college switching to engineering. I got sick of California so I joined the Army for three years. After that my life was a world-wind of various jobs. I was an electronics assembler for a year. After that an electronics technician, a computer digitizer, a computer operator and finally a computer programmer.
Then as a business partner in an import-export business I went to Hongkong. That eventually led to getting married. Some few years after that I officially became a senior. It happened so innocently I didn’t even notice it. That is until, about 1997 when I decided to get back into programming.
My age was now a disadvantage. What company would hire me and pay me the same or more salary that I had been making 20 years before? They could easily hire someone fresh from college and pay them $20,000 or $30,000 less money for the same work.
Seniors have An Edge in Internet Marketing Over Offline Jobs
Many seniors today are eager to start their own business or continue their careers even after retirement. They’re no longer content to become inactive – nor can most afford to completely retire.
If you’re considering an offline job or business after retirement, think the Internet. There are many career paths it offers. More seniors are turning to the Internet because it can be profitable. You can set up your business at home and set your own hours.
That gives you the ability to have cash in your pocket for some luxuries rather than necessities. It also gives you the freedom to travel or take time off to play with the grandchildren or spend time with friends and family.
6 Reasons Why Online Trumps Offline for Seniors Who want to Keep Earning
- The Internet doesn’t discriminate against age as some offline employers do. You can even use a pen name for your websites and other communication if you don’t want to put your real information out there.
- You can work in any niche that appeals to you or that you may have developed skills in from another job. This can also appeal to other marketers who may use you as a freelancer to gather information about the niche.
- People are purchasing more products online than offline. It’s a convenient way to shop. Plus your advertising will reach far more of the global population. It beats typical paper and media advertisements that you pay a premium for.
- Social media such as Facebook and Pinterest can be an awesome tool to drive traffic to your website. It beats setting up a booth at a trade-show and hope that buyers will stop by and make the long day a profitable one.
- It’s easier to monitor your online marketing efforts versus offline methods. And you can change your ads or methods of getting your product known immediately and without great costs involved.
- You can use emails to get the word out to your online customers. It is a better and more profitable way to market rather than flyers or other means of offline communication. Also emails don’t cost more than a monthly fee in some cases.
As you build your business or keep active by accepting online jobs, you’ll learn more about how to make your efforts more profitable.
In Internet Marketing You Never Stop Learning
Every day is a learning experience on the internet. Things change so fast it’s imperative to keep up with what’s going on. That’s especially true in your own niche. Often things that worked well for you may not work well or sometimes not at all next year.
Sometimes, even often, it is not your fault. Techniques become saturated and become less effective. One common situation involves the 800 pound elephant in the room, Google. If you are using SEO or maybe not using it, a change in Googles algorithm can wipe out your ratings.
When this happens you can lose a lot of visitors to your site. Occasionally such a change could also bring you more visitors to your site. But count on that. That lose of traffic due to Google happened to me on this site of mine where the visitor count went down from about 1300 visitors a day to about 30/day over a two year period.
Internet marketing is a method to supplement your retirement income. It’s also a way to learn new things and keep your mind active and focused. It offers many benefits beyond money. But let’s face it. Money is the number one reason most people get into online marketing. So let’s talk more about that for a minute.
Part Time Work for Full Time Pay – Seniors like that Benefit
More seniors are discovering the benefits of working part time to supplement their inadequate incomes. Making money online can be fun and a learning experience. They’re also finding that working part time can equal the full time pay they used to enjoy on a job.
Even with the 401Ks and IRAs seniors may have set aside as they worked for a company it is still too little money. They’re finding it’s still not enough to live comfortably when they retire. Many seniors find themselves at loose ends upon retirement from a company.
Medical problems may also loom large, preventing finding or performing a job as they once did. Most seniors have to seek a part time job just to make ends meet. Seniors have found that even a part time online business can turn into a major boost in earnings. Often that’s when using the valuable skills they’ve honed during years of working for the corporate world.
By utilizing the Internet to set up and build a lucrative online business, seniors can make ends meet. Not only that, but still have time to spend with family or on travel and hobby pursuits.
Starting a new business in your golden years may seem like quite a challenge. Keep in mind, however, that all you need is a computer and an Internet connection. After your business is up and running you can devote as much or as little time and money as you want to make it a success.
Using the Internet to Make Money Online Allows Seniors to Enjoy more Freedom
Choosing to use the Internet as a means to make money lets seniors enjoy more freedom. They can set their own hours and decide for themselves how much money they want to make. The sky’s the limit on the money you can make when you become an online entrepreneur. You’re the boss and you decide how much you want to put into the business you’ve created.
Visit online forums and blogs. You’ll likely find seniors who are learning or have already become successful in creating online businesses. Most of these entrepreneurs are happy to help others become successful making money online.
Keep in mind you don’t need a lot of money to begin your business and make money online. Paying for the Internet connection, a domain, and hosting are pretty much all you need to get started. It’s best to build a mailing list too so an autoresponder is also advised. That’s less than $20/mo.
Beware of those online scams that offer pie in the sky opportunities and promise overnight success. Check them out in marketing forums (such as the Warrior Forum) and ask for advice on blogs or government watch dog sites.
Online Activity Allows Seniors to Make more Friends
This is really a side benefit of being online. Although a side benefit, it is possible to turn it into an additional way to make more money if you are promoting something. Beside the fringe potential money benefit, you get a chance to meet people online you’d never meet in real life.
For example, I have a lady in India write articles for me when I don’t feel like it or don’t have the time. She has been doing that for several years. She also has her own blog on obesity. Normally I’d never meet her or know of her if it wasn’t for the internet.
I had another lady write articles and quizzes for me on my Travel Quiz Weekly site. She lives in the Philippines. Unless I went to the city she lives in I’d never even meet her.
Over the years I’ve met dozens of people online I never would have even known about if it were not for my online activities. This will happen to you too.
Online Success is Different for Different People
As far as I’m concerned I haven’t been very successful online like I know I could have been. This could happen to you too if you are anything like me. Unfortunately I am the kind of person that wants to keep abreast on things I like. I happen to like internet marketing so I end up buying lots of goodies.
Most I don’t use or just check them out to keep abreast of the latest so-called method of making money online. I caution you not to do this. You end up wasting a lot of money and time. It is better to stick to one thing at a time. If for whatever reason that doesn’t work out, then and only then try something else.
Although I have made thousands from some of the things I’ve tried I have wasted thousands on other internet products that I never used or things that just plain didn’t work. My advice is to stay away from temptation to try everything or keep up to date with what’s working. It is a road to failure.
Has this article shown you a few reasons seniors should embrace trying to make money online?
P.S. As a savvy senior, I try to take advantage of time-saving and money saving resources. For example, you could use appropriate PLR to write articles. Sometimes you can find it for $7 during a firesale or in a promotion on JVZoo. It can save hours of writing. 😉
P.P.S. Don’t make this mistake I’ve done and buy PLR and never use it. If you don’t know how to customize the PLR as your own find a gig on Fiverr that will do it for you.
